Kennedy Nolan

Kennedy Nolan was established in 1999 and has since developed a reputation as a design-focused practice with a distinctive approach to built form. The practice is dedicated to the production of architecture that is highly responsive to its context and seeks to form a strong relationship with landscape. Design at Kennedy Nolan is generated drawing on the optimistic precepts of modernism – rational, utilitarian, empowered by technology – and a positive view that the design and arrangement of spaces can support and reinforce relationships, can add piquancy and zest to life. Less tangibly, the practice is also compelled to distil the impalpable – to draw on the reaches of memory, the evocative power of recognising form, colour, texture and light, the resonance of shared memories, of history and landscapes.

The foundation of the practice has been residential architecture, diversifying over the years into large-scale multi-residential, mixed-use, retail, and education typologies.

We pride ourselves on an innovative approach to public and residential projects that delivers a highly responsive design, sensitive to its context and robust in achieving the brief requirements with sustainable design initiatives.

Our design approach draws on the handmade, handcrafted, sculptural form of modernism. We are interested in being socially and aesthetically progressive. This is evident in the highly individual nature of our projects, which respond to the unique qualities of each site and client. Frequently working on confined sites, our projects transform the relationship between interior and exterior, utilizing colour, light and texture.

Kennedy Nolan is a practice recognised for design excellence. This has been demonstrated through numerous industry awards, through our involvement in the architecture schools and Australian Institute of Architects via lectures, exhibitions and the extensive publication of our work.
