Heide Modern: A Space Between

When John and Sunday Reed moved into Heide II, an award-winning Modernist home, in 1968, it was their dream that it would one day become a public art museum. The Reeds tasked architect David McGlashan with designing the house, instructing him to craft ‘a gallery to be lived in.’ In 1981, their dream became a reality, and the home, now known as Heide Modern, opened its doors to the public for the display of art.

Curated by Chloe Jones and Laura Lantieri, Heide Modern: A Space Between examines the concept of home as a place where conversations, leisure, labour, intimate relationships and closely held values and beliefs cohabitate. The exhibition considers how architecture shapes lived experience while simultaneously reflecting on notions of memory and domestic life. The display further examines the intersection of private and public life, with reference to the building’s transition from a residence to a museum.

Artists to feature in the exhibition include: Micky Allen, Sam Atyeo, Stephen Benwell, Pat Brassington, Mike Brown, Jon Campbell, Zoë Croggon, Aleks Danko, Moya Dyring, Emily Floyd, Katherine Hattam, Joy Hester, Carol Jerrems, Les Kossatz, Robert MacPherson, Hilary Mais, David McDiarmid, Erica McGilchrist, Rose Nolan, Sidney Nolan, Rosslynd Piggott, Wes Placek, Sweeney Reed, Kathy Temin, Richard Tipping and Jenny Watson.
