A meticulous and sensitive restoration of a 17th century apartment was one of the most highly awarded projects in the Australian Institute of Architects International Chapter Architecture Awards.
Paris Apartment by Wood Marsh sits within an original building designed in 1668 by the architect of the Palace of Versailles, Jules Hardouin-Mansart. The historic building fabric was celebrated while the interior contrasts the Barque detailing.
The project is a “masterly design response to the high-stakes heritage envelope by contrasting French classical and floral style with minimal decor. They met the challenge of balancing respect for the past, and a gallery style contemporary residence, with confidence,” praised the jury.
Paris Apartment was awarded the Hugh O’Neil Award for Heritage Architecture, named in honour of the late architect and educator who mentored several generations of students in Southeast Asia, China, India and Sri Lanka. It also received an International Chapter Award for Interior Architecture.
The International Chapter Awards were announced at an in-person celebration at Bella Center in Copenhagen, coinciding the World Architecture Congress.
Winners of the awards will now progress to the National Architecture Awards, which will be announced in Canberra on 31 October.
