The Australian Institute of Architects announced the winners of the Queensland Architecture Awards at Brisbane’s State Library on 24 June, acknowledging more than 70 projects across 11 categories.
This year’s recipient of the Queensland Medallion – the state’s highest honour for architecture – was lauded for its high level of design thinking, with its distinctive, interconnected “pod” balconies connecting student learning spaces.
The Andrew N. Liveris Building within the University of Queensland, by Lyons and M3 Architecture, houses the essential facilities that will support research to address the country’s sustainability challenges as part of the university’s School of Chemical Engineering.
The jury congratulated the university for its ongoing commitment to world-class learning facilities and its efforts towards a more sustainable future. In addition to the Queensland Medallion, this standout project also received the Jennifer Taylor Award for Educational Architecture, the Karl Langer Award for Urban Design and an Award for Interior Architecture.
The jury said this year’s entries were particularly meaningful for their demonstrated engagement with local communities, with buildings that “answered people’s needs but also delivered with delight.”
All recipients of awards and named awards will progress to the 2022 National Architecture Awards, to be announced on 3 November.
